THE FESTIVAL PREMISE
The MOS Film Fest is a first of its kind celebration of community, play, and filmmaking. The core idea behind the festival is to screen films WITHOUT SOUND, in unconventional settings, to bring an immersive experience to both the films and the spaces.
Unlike conventional film festivals, things like the premiere status, technical quality, filmmaker experience, or other industry considerations don't factor into our decision-making process. Instead, we're in search of the best content for the space.
For this inaugural year, the MOS Film Fest will take place at the indoor park in Vivo, located in North Central Calgary. The indoor park is a first of its kind space that cultivates free play and unstructured activities year round - for everyone to enjoy.
Within the park, films may screen alongside a workout class, a preschool group, children riding their bikes, a group of adults walking around the boardwalk - or all of the above simultaneously. The flexible world the park creates also gives way to a unique and unpredictable soundtrack for the films as they screen. No two people will experience them the same way, and as films are shown multiple times during the festival, no two screenings of the films will be the same.
A truly co-created artistic experience where film meets free play.
This year, special programming consideration will be given to films and content created by local and "hyper-local" filmmakers - those from Calgary and North Central Calgary in particular. We want to champion the voices of Calgarians and our neighbours in NCYYC!
The term "film" can be used quite liberally in regards to our festival. We're looking for interesting ambient content as well as more narratively driven films.
Catch a cool wildlife interaction on your Ring camera? How about something funny with your kids at the park? Have your teens been making cool Tik Toks?
SUBMIT! These all sound like perfect candidates for the MOS Film Fest.
Do you have a finished film gathering dust on the "shelf", or maybe an idea you've been wanting to try? How about something you shot on your iPhone but are worried the quality isn't quite up to snuff?
SUBMIT! We don't care what your film was shot on, when you filmed it, or where/if it's already screened.
If you have a brilliant film that has dialogue or other sound it just can't live without - don't despair! Submit to our Classic Silent Film Category! You'll need to provide closed captioning on screen to qualify - if it's captioned in more than one language that's a bonus.
When in doubt, submit! We can't wait to review your work and celebrate in October at the festival!
