FAQs

What does “MOS” mean?

MOS is a filmmaking term used to indicate a shot is begin filmed without recording sound alongside it. Hence, the MOS (aka silent) Film Fest!

How is this different from other film festivals?

The MOS Film Fest is unique in a few key ways. The first is the content of course - all films will be presented without audio! Secondly, the films will be screening in an unconventional setting, in the middle of an indoor park while a plethora of activities unfold around it - no dedicated crowd or dimmed lights. The third is that we’re putting creativity and content first when selecting the films we present - this levels the playing field and means ANYONE can submit and get in.

Who should submit, do I need to be a “legit” filmmaker?

At the MOS Film Fest we subscribe to the idea that if you make a film, guess what? You’re a filmmaker! We’ve created this space to invite people from all experience levels and walks of life to be inspired and create something new. That doesn’t mean we aren’t interested in seeing seasoned directors’ work - far from it! Our goal is for everyone to feel excited and welcome to play in the world of visual media and submit something they had fun making.

Who is the team behind the festival, is it a Vivo event?

Though Vivo’s indoor park will be our venue and home for the week of the festival itself, the MOS Film Fest is not officially affiliated with Vivo. The team behind the festival is a (very) small but (very) mighty group of filmmakers and creatives that are passionate about building community while making art. Their fearless leader is Paige K Boudreau, a local filmmaker and television producer.

Why host the festival at Vivo?

The Vivo indoor park is a first-of-its-kind innovative space that allows for unstructured free play year round - which is a huge plus living in a crazy climate city like Calgary! Our festival director Paige K Boudreau watched the indoor park flourish from a post-it on a vision board, to architectural drawings, to standing inside the completed space. Hosting a creative, community-inclusive event like the MOS Film Fest has been a dream of hers since the beginning and she’s finally making it a reality - with the help of you!
